Filezilla is an FTP client that lets you easily upload files of your website on your machine. The benefit of an FTP client is that you can save your password and username so you’ll always be connected with your website. Also on the left you can see the files that are on your computer and on the right you can see the files of your website. We’ll come back to that later.
First go to the website of Filezilla and click on the “Download Filezilla client” button.
As you can see it’s available on all platforms, so it doesn’t matter if you’re on mac or windows.
Just follow the installation guide and open FIlezilla. It should look something like this:
As you probably have noticed, we’re not yet connected to a server, so lets do that first. You could type in your host name, username, password and port and just quick connect, but we’re going to take another approach so your website will actually be saved in Filezilla.
Go to ‘File’ and click on ‘Site Manager’ in the menu bar of Filezilla.
Next type in all the information required, like in the picture below.
Remember that this a tutorial, the info fields Host, User and Password will of course differ from what you’ll put in. However, the port is the same, 21 is the default value, so you could also leave it blank.
Now just click connect…. And voila, you’re connected to your website and can start transferring files by just dragging and dropping, you can ofcourse also download files from your website, this can be useful for backups. Your website files will be located in the public_html folder.
